HONOURING THE THATCHING HERITAGE OF THE SOUTHERN CAPE

Tracing its lineage back to Lucas Quality Thatchers over four decades ago, JNA Group Thatchers division has become deeply intertwined with the thatching tradition of the Southern Cape. Many of its master thatchers come from the coastal farming community of Elim, custodians of generational knowledge, their hands skilled in the rhythm of bundle preparation, reed layering and the subtleties of structural thatch detailing.

The Southern Cape offers a singular environment for thatch. Thamnochortus insignis, commonly referred to as Cape reed, grow wild in the region’s winter rainfall belt, nurtured by the Mediterranean style climate that encourages slow growth and a naturally high preservative content within the plant’s core. This reed is harvested with care, with only mature stems selected and prepared to exact standards, then installed to the correct thickness so that the finished roof not only radiates heritage beauty but performs with longevity and integrity.

Historically, Cape reed played an essential and practical role in early construction across the region. It was simply the material that was available, abundant and suited to the climate, and naturally became the foundation of early dwellings. As years of colonisation followed, this material shaped and influenced the development of Cape Dutch architecture, contributing to the iconic silhouettes and homestead forms that define the region today. Over time, as architectural styles evolved, thatching became a specialised architectural niche, valued not only for its practicality but for its cultural, aesthetic and environmental significance.

JNA Group Thatchers division blends this historic, indigenous material with contemporary architectural expectations. Across the Southern Cape, from heritage farmhouses resting between fynbos ridges to modern coastal residences overlooking the ocean, the company delivers bespoke roofs constructed to technical best practice.

Beyond the Southern Cape, JNA Group’s expertise extends into the Cape Winelands and further afield, creating refined and sophisticated thatched roofs in South Africa’s luxury estates, the Middle East and the Mediterranean. Each roof remains rooted in the South African ancestral material, its skilled craftsmanship and its climate informed building tradition.

As a founding member of the Thatchers Association of South Africa, JNA Group upholds rigorous standards of design, durability and craftsmanship. Their commitment extends beyond the built project to the community itself. By sourcing local reed, supporting thatchers from Elim and reinforcing regional supply chains, they ensure that this centuries old craft continues to thrive.

A thatched roof in the Southern Cape is far more than an architectural finish. It is a continuation of place based knowledge, shaped by environment, history and the hands that build it. With every project, JNA Group Thatchers division honours that tradition, blending local ecology, artisan skill and architectural ambition to create roofs that carry the enduring essence of the Southern Cape while looking confidently toward the future.
