Designing Roofs That Last: Timber, Ceilings & Conversions

A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO TIMBER STRUCTURES, CEILINGS, AND ROOF CONVERSIONS
For over four decades, JNA Group's Roofing Division has been delivering high end timber roofing solutions across the Western Cape. A roof that performs reliably over time is the result of careful planning, precise detailing, and expert execution.
Our in house team brings together more than a decade of experience and includes structural engineers, construction managers, master carpenters, quantity surveyors, and professional draughtsmen. This depth of expertise allows JNA Group to manage complex roofing projects from concept to completion, whether the brief involves a sensitive roof conversion or a full roof redesign.
ROOF CONVERSIONS AND STRUCTURAL CONSIDERATIONS
A roof conversion requires more than aesthetic consideration alone. Existing timber condition, roof pitch, load paths, and future use all influence the design and construction approach. Early assessment is essential to ensure structural soundness, long term durability, and compliance with HOA and local authority requirements.
Choosing the right roof covering, whether shingles, corrugated sheeting, or thatch, must strike a careful balance between structural capacity and visual intent. Each material brings its own technical demands that need to be resolved early to achieve a successful and lasting outcome.
INTRODUCING NATURAL LIGHT WITH ROOF WINDOWS
Roof windows are an effective way to introduce daylight and ventilation into roof spaces, particularly in roof conversions. JNA Group’s Roofing Division is an accredited installer of VELUX roof windows, with experience across both timber ceilings and thatch roofs.
Correct placement, appropriate flashing selection, and thoughtful internal finishing are essential to ensure weather resistance and a refined interior result. Our custom internal timber roof window moulding is designed to accommodate natural timber movement over time while maintaining clean lines and a considered architectural finish.
CEILING OPTIONS AND PERFORMANCE
Ceilings form a critical interface between the roof structure and the living space below. Material choice influences insulation performance, long term maintenance, and overall visual character. Common ceiling options include grooved ply, which offers a cost effective timber aesthetic, and SA Poplar ceilings. Clear treated SA Pine and SA Poplar remain popular for their natural character and reliable long term performance when correctly specified and installed.
A CONSIDERED APPROACH TO ROOFING
By combining technical expertise with practical experience, JNA Group’s Roofing Division delivers roof structures that perform quietly and reliably for decades. When planning a roof conversion, ceiling upgrade, or timber roof structure, informed decisions made early in the process can make a meaningful difference to the longevity and quality of the final result.
