THATCH CRAFTED FOR THE LANDSCAPE | A GONDWANA RESIDENCE BY JNA GROUP THATCHING DIVISION

A union of contemporary design, handcrafted thatching and the natural beauty of Gondwana Game Reserve.

Nestled in the heart of Gondwana Game Reserve, the Sunset Ridge home stands as a celebration of thoughtful design, meticulous craftsmanship and a deep respect for its natural surroundings.

From the first glance, the home’s contemporary architectural lines are softened and enriched by the warmth of a traditionally thatched roof, expertly created by the JNA Group Thatching Division. What makes this home unique is the metal box dormer, which brings a contemporary dimension to a traditionally thatched form. The roof is not only a nod to time-honoured techniques but also a demonstration of precision and care, creating a space that feels both welcoming and refined.

At Gondwana, the JNA Group Thatching Division also incorporates galvanized chicken mesh over the thatch to protect it from baboon damage. When first installed it is visible, but as the thatch naturally weathers and turns grey, the mesh blends in and becomes almost unnoticeable. This careful approach helps limit maintenance while ensuring the roof remains as beautiful as the day it was installed.

Step inside, and the home reveals a seamless connection to the landscape beyond. VELUX and other panoramic windows on both floors frame the rolling terrain, allowing the beauty of the reserve to fill every room. Natural light pours in, accentuating textures and finishes, while offering ever-changing views of wildlife and the surrounding scenery. Each space feels thoughtfully curated to balance comfort, elegance and a sense of openness, making the home a true sanctuary in the midst of nature.

Photographer Ruan Redelinghuys captured the home, highlighting the way the architecture, the thatch and the landscape come together. Showcasing the warmth of the roof, the clean lines of the dormer, and the quiet elegance of each interior space, allowing the home to speak for itself.

Sunset Ridge is a home where tradition meets modernity, craftsmanship meets landscape, and every detail has been considered to create a space that feels timeless and deeply connected to its surroundings. The JNA Group Thatching Division’s work anchors the home in heritage while supporting its contemporary design, resulting in a residence that is both elegant and perfectly in harmony with Gondwana Game Reserve.
