A YEAR OF CRAFT, COLLABORATION, AND CELEBRATION: REFLECTIONS FROM JNA GROUP

As 2025 draws to a close, we pause to reflect on the year gone by and express our heartfelt gratitude. It has been a year filled with creativity, collaboration, and remarkable achievements. We have had the privilege of working alongside visionary architects, dedicated contractors, and incredible clients, bringing inspiring projects to life across the country.

At the heart of all we do is our exceptional team, whose passion, skill, and commitment are the foundation of everything we achieve. Their dedication ensures that each project is more than just a structure—it is a story, a craft, and a celebration of heritage.

One project, in particular, captures the spirit of our year: the construction of the Boschendal Thatch Tree. More than a festive installation, this tree embodies everything we value—tradition, craftsmanship, and the quiet beauty of work done with intention.

The project began with Cape reed (Thamnochortus insignis), indigenous to the Southern Cape and carefully sourced from communities such as Albertinia. Here, harvesting remains a practiced skill, an intergenerational responsibility, and a living connection to the land. Each bundle of reed carries the story of the landscape it comes from—the wind, the soil, the season, and the hands of the people who cut and prepare it.

On site, every strand was inspected, trimmed, layered, and shaped by hand. The Boschendal Thatch Tree has now taken its full form, not merely as a structure, but as a celebration of heritage and the enduring connection between material, maker, and landscape.

This tree is a testament to what can be achieved when tradition, skill, and vision come together. Built through the hands of traditional craftsmen whose knowledge has been passed down through generations, it honours one of the oldest building traditions of the Cape Winelands. Thatching is a rhythm and discipline, carried forward by those who understand that craftsmanship is inherited and should be nurtured with care.

“Without craftsmanship, inspiration is a mere reed shaken in the wind.” – Johannes Brahms

As we look back on this year, we extend our gratitude to our clients, partners, craftsmen, and teams for their trust, collaboration, and dedication. May this festive season bring rest, celebration, and inspiration, and may the year ahead be filled with new opportunities to create, craft, and celebrate the beauty of intentional work.
