TIMBER IN FOCUS: A JNA SERIES

Episode One with Wynand Wilsenach Architects

JNA Group is proud to introduce the Timber Series, a new conversation platform dedicated to exploring the potential and impact of timber in contemporary architecture. In each episode, a JNA Group representative sits down with a leading architect to discuss design philosophy, materiality, and the role of timber in shaping extraordinary spaces.

In this first episode, Abrie Visagie, technical director at JNA Group, hosts Wynand Wilsenach from Wynand Wilsenach Architects (WWA). For this episode, Wynand and Abrie Visagie reflect on timber’s enduring relevance, from its history and versatility to its warmth, character, and expressive potential.

Timber as a Living Material

They discuss the distinctive qualities of timber, describing it as a living material with personality and warmth. Unlike inert construction materials, timber carries memory, movement, and expression. They highlight how timber adds depth to architecture, allowing spaces to feel alive and authentic.

"You cannot believe how many hands it takes to build a house and what a strong team you need to get something done properly," Wynand notes, underlining the collaborative spirit required when working with timber at scale. He and Abrie also speak about the many projects they have completed over the years in partnership with JNA Group, showcasing how teamwork and thoughtful timber use bring extraordinary architectural visions to life.

Craft, Connection, and Creativity

The conversation also turns to how timber connections are made, from tie beams to exposed beams, and how these structural necessities can become design features. How these connections not only demonstrate strength but also create opportunities for playful creativity, where engineering meets artistry.

They focus on timber’s adaptability and how it makes the material an architect’s ally, whether used to frame serene family homes or dramatic villas.

Projects That Tell a Story

The episode is anchored by a showcase of JNA Group and WWA’s collaborative projects, where timber’s versatility and warmth take centre stage:

  • De Mond, Hermanus | Photographer: Johann Jordaan

  • Clara Anna Fontein, Durbanville | Photographer: Ryan Abbott

Each project reveals a different expression of timber, demonstrating how the material supports both form and function while enriching the human experience of space.

Why Timber, Why Now

Timber is one of the most sustainable, flexible, and expressive building materials available today. As the Timber Series continues, JNA Group will explore timber’s evolving role in architecture through conversations with leading voices in design. From tradition to innovation, timber continues to offer new ways to shape structures that are not only functional but deeply resonant.
